You just got a new crystal. Or maybe you've had one for a while and something feels... different about it. Heavier. Quieter. Like it lost its spark.
That's not your imagination. That's your intuition telling you it's time to cleanse.
Crystals are energetic tools. They absorb and hold energy — yours, the energy of everyone who handled them before you, the energy of spaces they've been sitting in. Over time, that accumulation can dull their resonance and yours with them.
Cleansing clears what's been absorbed. Charging restores their energy and aligns them with your intention.
Both are simple. Neither has to be complicated. Here's how to do it.
Why Cleansing Matters
Think of a crystal like a sponge. From the moment it's mined, processed, shipped, shelved, and handled, it's picking up energetic residue. By the time it reaches you, it's already carrying a story.
Cleansing doesn't erase what a crystal is — it clears what it's been holding so it can fully show up for you.
You'll want to cleanse a crystal:
When you first bring it home. After an emotionally heavy conversation or experience. After someone else has handled it. When it feels energetically dull or different. Regularly as part of your practice, even if nothing specific happened.
Trust your instincts here. If you feel like a crystal needs to be cleansed, it probably does.
Methods for Cleansing
There's no single right way. Choose the method that feels aligned — and always consider your crystal's specific properties before you begin, as some stones can be damaged by water or sunlight.
Sound
Sound is one of the most universally safe cleansing methods. A singing bowl, tuning fork, bells, or even clapping around the stone disrupts stagnant energy and restores vibration. This works well for larger pieces, clusters, or crystals you're unsure about. It's simple, effective, and accessible to anyone.
Smoke
Passing your crystal through the smoke of incense, sage, or palo santo is a traditional and widely used method. Hold the crystal in the smoke for 30–60 seconds with a clear intention to release what it's been holding. This method works for nearly all stones. Just make sure you're in a ventilated space.
Earth
Burying a crystal directly in the earth (or in a pot of soil) for 24–48 hours returns it to the source of its energy. This is a slow, thorough method — especially powerful for stones that have been working hard or carrying heavy energy. Just mark where you buried it.
Moonlight
Setting your crystals outside or on a windowsill under the moonlight is a gentle, passive cleanse. The full moon amplifies this — but any night works. This method is safe for virtually all stones and doubles as a charging method.
Other Crystals
Certain crystals are known for their cleansing properties and can be used to clear other stones. Selenite is one of the most well-known — simply place your crystals on or near a selenite slab or bowl overnight. It doesn't need to be cleansed itself (though it can still benefit from other methods).
A note on water: Some people cleanse with running water, but this method requires care. Soft or porous stones like selenite, malachite, celestite, and pyrite can be damaged or dissolved by water. When in doubt, choose a different method.
Methods for Charging
Cleansing clears the old. Charging fills the crystal back up — with fresh energy, with intention, with purpose.
Sunlight
A few hours in direct sunlight is one of the most energizing charges available. The sun's energy is activating and amplifying. However, some crystals can fade in prolonged sunlight — amethyst, rose quartz, aquamarine, and fluorite are especially light-sensitive. Brief exposure (1–2 hours) is generally fine; all-day sun is not recommended for these stones.
Moonlight
What cleanses also charges. The moon's energy is intuitive, receptive, and deeply aligned with the natural rhythm of working with crystals. You don't need a full moon for this — any consistent moonlight will do. This is also one of the safest methods for every crystal in your collection.
Intention
This one is often underestimated. Hold your crystal in your hands. Close your eyes. Breathe. Consciously direct your intention into the stone — what you want it to support, what energy you're calling in, what you're asking it to hold.
Your intention is not a small thing. It's the whole point.
Selenite
Just as selenite can cleanse, it also charges. Leaving your crystals on a selenite charging plate overnight is one of the easiest, most low-maintenance methods — no weather required, no timing needed. It's a foundational piece for any crystal practice.
How Often Should You Cleanse?
There's no universal schedule. But a few loose guidelines:
New crystals: always cleanse before first use. Working crystals (ones you carry, wear, or meditate with regularly): once a month is a reasonable rhythm, or more often if you've been going through something heavy. Display crystals: every few months, or when they feel like they need it.
Again — your intuition matters here. If you feel called to cleanse something, that's enough reason.
A Simple Cleansing + Charging Ritual
If you want to make this more intentional, try this:
Light a white chime candle to mark the ritual as intentional space. Hold your crystal and take three slow breaths. Say aloud (or silently): "I release all energy that is not mine. I welcome in what is aligned." Choose your cleansing method and move through it with presence — not urgency. When you're done, hold the crystal again and set a clear intention for what you want it to support. Place it somewhere intentional: on your altar, by your bed, in your pocket.
Blow out your candle. The ritual is complete.
A Few Common Questions
Can you over-cleanse a crystal? No. Cleansing doesn't diminish a crystal's properties. If anything, regular cleansing keeps it working at full capacity.
What if I don't know what kind of crystal I have? When in doubt, sound and moonlight are safe for everything. Avoid water and prolonged sun until you can identify the stone.
Do crystals need to be charged if they're just sitting out? They benefit from it, yes — especially if they're in a busy or energetically active environment. Even ambient energy can build up over time.
Closing
A cleansed and charged crystal isn't just a prettier version of the same stone. It's an energetically clear tool — one that can meet your intentions with full presence rather than filtered through weeks of accumulated energy.
The practice doesn't need to be elaborate.
It just needs to be intentional.
