A candle can be burning beautifully at the center while a thick wall of untouched wax gathers around its edge. If you have wondered why candles tunnel, the answer is usually practical rather than mystical: the wax did not have enough time or heat to melt evenly across the container. Why Candles Tunnel in the First Place
Tunneling happens when the wax directly around the wick melts downward before the heat can reach the outer edge of the candle. Over several burns, that melted center becomes deeper and narrower, leaving a ring or wall of unused wax around it. This is especially common with container candles, but it can happen with pillars and some spell candles too.
The most common cause is a burn that is too short, particularly the first one. Wax has a kind of memory. When a new candle is extinguished before its melt pool reaches close to the sides of the vessel, the next burn tends to follow that same smaller circle. A quick 20-minute light before leaving the house may be soothing, but it rarely gives a larger candle enough time to establish an even pool.

For a more pronounced tunnel, the foil method can help redirect heat toward the sides.
